Looking for a thrifty way to expand your horizons while helping others in need at the same time? Then mark your calendar to attend the eighth-annual Used-Book Sale sponsored by the Church of the Ascension (2330 Viewmont Way W.).

The sale will take place Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Aug. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., during Magnolia’s Summerfest.

This event offers a reservoir of reading materials for those eager to extend their learning experience beyond the computer screen. Plus, proceeds go to benefit a wide spectrum of programs, including Seattle’s homeless programs, as well as three schools: locally, First Place School; nationally, Oglala Lakota Nursing School; and internationally, St. Vincent’s School in Haiti.

Co-chair Betty Mueller said, “A dozen paperbacks sold at $1 each will pay to feed 10 homeless men and women a nutritious, warm meal at Operation Nightwatch in Downtown Seattle. In Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, a child can be sent to school with a uniform and books for the year when 10 hardbound books are sold at $2 each. Or buying a used book at our sale may also assist needy individuals at New Beginnings and New Horizons. It’s a win-win situation.”
Contributions of used books from the community-at-large are welcome. Book donations are accepted at the Ascension church from July 29 to Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Income withholding tax forms are available.
