Queen Anne Chamber

The Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce (QACC) will honor four very deserving businesses and individuals who made a difference in 2013 with the Queen Anne Chamber Awards:

•Large Business Award: Kaspar’s — Owners Kaspar and Nancy Donier have been constant supporters of local nonprofit companies in their 25 years of business. Chef Kaspar has worked with the Queen Anne Food Bank to provide a weekly donation of soup, along with other food donations throughout the year to other organizations such as Plymouth Housing and Northwest Harvest.

Each year, the couple takes their family the day after the holidays to Plymouth Housing to serve food to its tenants.

•Small Business Award: Christopher Togawa Insurance Agency — Togawa has been huge supporter of the Queen Anne Helpline and the Fun Run and an active board member for the QACC.

Their employees are very involved in their church communities, hosting fundraisers, teaching Sunday school, serving the youth movement projects and donating extra time for “over-and-above” projects. They also serve as leaders for their children’s respective Boy Scouts troops and, one serves as a Big Brother.

•Community Service Award: John Coney — He has been a true moving force in the improvement and guardian of the urban culture in Uptown Queen Anne community for many years.

•The President’s Award: TBA — The recipient will be announced at the event.

The Uptown Art Walk will be on Wednesday, April 16. We will encompass Queen Anne Avenue from Roy Street north, Roy Street west to Fifth Avenue and Roy Street. It will begin at 5 p.m. and run until 7:30 p.m.

From the information breakfast that was held on April 3, we received a great deal of concern from small-business owners regarding their ability to remain open if the minimum wage shoots up 60 percent to $15 per hour.

We ask the community to write the City Council members to let him/her know your feelings regarding the $15 wage issue.  

Queen Anne Helpline

One of the popular services the Queen Anne Helpline offers is a clothing bank. Stocked with a variety of donated men’s and women’s items and household linens, the clothing bank helps clients fill basic clothing needs, as well as more special needs, such as job interview or work clothing.

The Helpline also partners with the Goodwill and Dress for Success programs to enhance clients’ abilities to find clothes that meet their needs. We can provide clients with Goodwill vouchers for specific clothing needs that the Helpline cannot meet, such as work boots or other in-demand items. In addition, we can provide needed referrals to Dress for Success, which provides low-income women with professional interview and work attire.

The clothing bank currently needs:

•Blankets, sheets and towels;

•Larger-size clothing for men and women;

•New packages of socks or underwear for men;

•Warm coats; and


We always need men’s clothing, especially casual clothes, work clothes and boots.

Clean and gently used donations can be dropped off at our office (311 W. McGraw St.) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please call first (206-282-1540).

On March 26, a group of 27 Queen Anne Elementary School students, from kindergarten through fifth grade, generously volunteered their time at the Helpline. In addition to bringing donated food and children’s books they collected at school, students made thank-you cards for the Helpline to send to donors and assembled healthy snack bags (which have already proved very popular) for clients to take with them after an appointment.

The Helpline is fortunate to get help from many school groups and individual children. Other examples of the help we have received from children include projects to pack Thanksgiving groceries for seniors, holiday gift campaigns, bake sales, collecting food at birthday parties or even asking for Helpline donations in lieu of presents.

These children’s generosity and caring helps us make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors in need and set an inspiring example for all of us.
