Twice, Queen Anne’s Coast baseball teams Herriott Sports Performance (HSP) and Blue Highway (BH) have faced each other in championship games. On May 7, HSP defeated Blue Highway in a tight 8-7 victory. HSP scored one big inning in the fifth to secure the win.

HSP and Blue Highway were the top two seeds going into the June 17 Tournament of Champions (ToC), facing AAA teams from Ballard and Magnolia at Gilman Field in Ballard. Blue Highway cruised straight to the championship game with a massive victory (18-0) over Magnolia’s 5-Spot. HSP defeated CSR Marine and Upper Lake in tight games, landing a spot in the championship game.

Once again, Blue Highway and HSP went at it with their bats. Despite superb pitching performances by Eli Senzel (HSP), Andrew Cerqui (BH), Gray LaVasseur (HSP), Bjorn Johnson (BH) and Nat Reed (HSP), the bats were alive in a high scoring game. Blue Highway had the tying run at second base when LaVasseur had to be relieved due to reaching the maximum pitch count.

HSP went to its trusted closer Nat Reed to gain the final out, the third-straight scoreless closing by Reed in the 2014 playoffs. HSP squeaked out the win by a score of 10-9.

Charlie Pehl (HSP), Bjorn Johnson (BH) and Jake Everard (HSP) had huge at-bats with five, five and three RBIs, respectively. The game ball was awarded to James Neuburger for a game-saving catch off the hot bat of Zach Petersen (BH) to straight-away deep center field in the fifth inning.

HSP roster: Nat Reed, Nicholas Ring, Sam Bear, James Neuburger, Gray LeVasseur, Eli Senzel, Levi Sprung, Tommy Lessig, Charles Pehl, TJ Armstrong, Drew Herman, Jake Everard, Sarah Lessig, Penguin

HSP coaches: Dave Reed, Keith Senzel, Nick Ring, Jill Lessig, Adam LeVasseur, Jeff Sprung

It was truly a magical season for Queen Anne Coast teams Blue Highway, Herriott Sports Performance and Steve Hicks. Congratulations to all of our Coast players.

DAVE REED is coach of the Queen Anne Little League’s HSP team.
